Update on the Allotment for June (week 28) : Broad Beans, Bunyards Exhibition

The Broad Beans, Bunyards Exhibition , didn't do all that great this year either, with less than 50% germination, it's been a strange growing year so far. With that said we where able to harvest 724g of pos today, with still a few more to come on the plants we still have. At least they covered the cost of the seed. (£1.80 for a pack of 50 seeds) Again the Poly-tunnel is like a forest, but everything seems to be growing well. Tomatoes have reached the top, and the Marrow is now a massive plant. We have tomatoes starting to form on the vines and lots of flowers. Picked some more soft fruit, all the black currants are now in with just over 2kg of fruit. The Jostaberry seemed a little down on other years, with some of the fruit dropping due to the heat we guess, and maybe some gone with the birds, but we still got 2.3kg of fruit from these. Around the allotment, things are starting to catch up a little, with the Kale and Cabbages growing nicely. The courgettes are getting bigger, ...

White Currant Jelly

Followed this YouTube Video , but used some white currants from last years harvest, as we need to free up some space in the hop freezer. Ingredients Used: White Currants 806g (Free) Water 403g (Just about Free) Sugar 474g (£0.54 per 500g) We didn't use any lemon juice as recommended in the video, as we felt that the flavour was great as it was. Ended up making 2x 12oz jars full, and it came out nice and clear, with a great colour. Total cost around £0.30 per 310ml/12oz Jar, not including the Jars of course.

Update on the Allotment for June (week 29) First Courgette Harvest

Courgette "Black Beauty" are doing well, had our first harvest today, a single Courgette coming in at 850g. They have put on loads of growth over the last few weeks. Quite a few more flowers and fruit forming, so we should get a good few more over the next few weeks. The Squash "Uchiki Kuri" are also doing well, starting to creep over the area where we had the garlic and broad beans. We even have our first Uchiki Kuri forming on one of the plants. We picked the last of the Broad Beans, Bunyards Exhibition as well today, only 188g but enough for another meal. Even though we didn't get many of the seeds to germinate, we still cropped nearly a kilo of beans (912g). Speaking of Beans, the second batch of Climbing French Bean Cobra are coming along, still a little slow but they are getting there now. The poly-tunnel has really filled up with tomatoes, marrows, and peppers. And we have had a few tomatoes to add to salads and meals and are far sweeter than shop ...
