Diseased Lautrec Wight Garlic and the First of the Broad Beans.

Got down to the Allotment today to find the Lautrec Wight garlic going brown and wilted. Pulled one up to find a white and powdery mould had formed on the base of the bulbs. Not good news as this could be a fungal disease (Sclerotium cepivorum) which means we will not be able to grow any Onions, garlic, leeks and other alliums at our site for a long long time.

We left the  Elephant Garlic in the ground as they still looked okay, but lifted all the Lautrec Wight, looks like we caught them just in time to still be able to use the bulbs.

Most of the bulbs are under developed but there are few that might be okay. On the plus side however these garlic did not cost us anything as they where grown from bulbs from the previous year.

The garlic are now on the BBQ smoker under cover to allow them to dry out completely

On the plus side of things the Aquadulce Claudia Broad Bean pods are now swelling nicely and we picked a few to take home to eat. Only a tub full but still 935g (inc pods)

There are still loads more pods to pick and they are very nice to eat, I think that we will do the same again this year and plant an over wintering crop again this October.
