We where having a Allotment bag sort out and tucked in the bottom was a packet of very old Swede seeds, so old that even the label had almost disappeared.
Since we had a bit of room left in the Oca Tubers (Oxalis tuberosa) bed, these old seeds got sown next to them. Two rows spaced apart by about 30cms. All guess work. Used all of the seeds in the found packet as we may not even get a single one to germinate.
After getting home and a bit of a web search these seem to be Swede Marian, which is a purple topped, yellow fleshed variety that is hardy and a reliable cropper. Will be nice if some of the old seed do germinate, as we would have a bonus crop this year. Found then at the right time as well as these are normally sown May-June time.
Also planted out a tub of the larger sunflowers from saved seed along the side of the brassica cage, just for a bit of fun really. Planted about 15 small plants spaced about 15cm apart all in a row, should be nice if the snails and slugs don't get at them.
