The Garlic's seem to be doing good, one of the Elephant Garlic is very small but the other three look great. The Lautrec Wight seem fine as well however some are now starting to get a bit shadowed by the Aquadulce Claudia Broad Beans. Some of the garlics are now producing scapes, so these have been picked off so they put more energy into the bulb production.
The Broad Beans, Bunyards Exhibition have germinated poorly. We don't know if it was poor seed or more to do with this years strange weather. We guess that we have only had about a 50% germination rate with these this year so it was a good call planting the overwintering crop Aquadulce Claudia Broad Bean as these are now producing flowers and bean pods. They are getting hit quite bad with the aphids which we will have to treat so we don't loose this crop.Talking about beans, the climbing beans are now starting to grow, not too many yet and only the Climbing French Bean Cobra have started to pop up, so the Goldfield Climbing beans are lagging behind.
The Kale and Cabbages are growing strong and protected from the pigeons in the brassica cage. We still can't seen any difference between the Kale plants, which should be a bed of Nero Di Toscana and a bed of Borecole Vates Blue Curled they look all the same at the moment. Hopefully we have both types, but I did mix up the labels when I sowed the seeds. The Cabbages as well, look the same even though the packet had 3 types of Cabbage in the packet.
The Oca Tubers (Oxalis tuberosa) have been growing slowly now they have been planted out. I thought that they might have put on a little more growth over the last few weeks. They are still alive and looking healthy with no signs of damage from pests. These tubers will have a long growing season as they will be in the ground for 5 or 6 months yet.
The Thor F1 sweet peppers in the greenhouse are slowly putting on new growth, slower than normal with this years weather, but they are doing pretty good. The old Kale "Borecole Vates Blue Curled", from last year have been pulled up as they where all setting seed and covered in aphids. Kinda sad to see them go as they really did well and kept us going in leafy greens all winter long. We will need to clear that spot completely for either the courgettes or winter squashes, both of which will need to be planted out soon.
